I recently moved to Canada with my family so my boys can attend high school here. I will still visit Taiwan and we plan to move back when our boys graduate. In the meantime I will post unpublished photos of Taiwan here
I lived in Southern Taiwan for thirty years and have been shooting and selling photographs professionally since 1998. I’ve been published in many national/international magazines, newspapers, websites and books (for a more complete list and tear sheets, see here). Specializing in editorial and portrait photography, I have amassed a large archive of Taiwan photos of which only a small sampling is online on Photoshelter. If you are looking for something, send a request, I’ll do my best to fill it.
My fluency in Taiwan’s language and culture lends a unique perspective to my photography and with my in-depth knowledge of Southern Taiwan acquired in the twenty years I’ve lived here, I wrote and photographed the southern section of the Michelin Green Guide for Taiwan, first edition.
I specialize in creating professional photographs Taiwan’s vibrant folk religion (Taoism), Aboriginals, mountains and am available for assignment and location work throughout Asia.

Hey Rich.
Finally, …some pictures of you and your family that I can put into my seriously outdated family photos. You all look good (healthy, happy, loved) and the website really leaves a great impression of friendly, approachable professionalism.
I wonder if you noticed the cutline that reads: I specialize…is available – it seems to include different tenses? Perhaps ‘am’ available?
I really like your new logo and wonder if the maroon characters in the block beside your name have special meaning? I’ll copy it and see if Heather can translate anything. Congratulations on a great site, it’s such a great, visual way for me to keep in touch with what you’re doing. I will reciprocate with an email picture shortly.
Loving you, and hoping a visit here on a trip to BC with Mike materializes.
Dad
Hi Dad,
Thanks for the grammar help. The blog is in it’s first few days and that is what I am striving for; friendly, approachable professionalism. I cut and pasted from my website ‘about’ and changed to first person so the blog would be more personal.
The chop(block) reads: ‘黃華攝影’ or Huang Hua She Ying, which is my Chinese name + photography. It is a fairly common font for business chops, probably because it fills the space nicely and looks good, but is difficult to read.
My designer/web guru was telling me how difficult the kerning is in a logo (we will tweak the logo when we have time, I think the J looks a tad out of place?). I remember you telling me that grandpa used to do it all with a paintbrush, we have it pretty easy these days!
We should make it to Canada this year.
Hi Rich,
I have copied the above pictures and I am going to post them to my face book.
I am really excited to see you and Alas and Vaji and Vilian this summer!
Love you, Mom
Rich,
Great site and extraordinary photos. Thanks for following my blog In My View. Look forward to seeing more from you. — Rob
I have been going up to Sanmin for the last 13 years but it has become quite frustrating since Morakot as everytime it rains now, well, you know the story. The last time I was up there for the ear festival, my wife and I almost did not make it out – good thing we left very early Sunday in the AM. I just got back from Puli, same story, back early Sunday AM, and well, you know the rest of that story too! Anyway, nice to see someone who appreciates the place – can’t say I have heard of you though. These people are like family…
Regards/Daniel
Hi Daniel, we met at a festival a few years back, most people call me Lief, pronounced ‘Life’. I saw you scooter by this festival but you were too far away to call out. We were also stuck for a while. Had to take the Shuang Lian Qu (雙連屈) road out.
Cheers, Rich
hey I think you left some links out.
You have the following text at the end of the first paragraph, above:
” I have amassed a large archive of Taiwan photosof which only a small sampling is online here and here.”
and the “here” and the other “here” are not links, but having them as links is the only way the sentence makes sense. So I’m assuming this is text you lifted from an earlier/other website and the links did not translate, or you wrote it up as text and forgot to add the links in. Either way, you might want to correct the sentence ;p
Quite right, thanks for taking the time!
