Renaissance Magazine Feature — (Zhongshan Hall (中山堂), Man-Le Gate (滿樂門), and the Ximen Red House (西門紅樓)
Taipei Old Buildings
I was commissioned to photograph three renovated old buildings (Zhongshan Hall (中山堂), Man-Le Gate (滿樂門), and the Ximen Red House (西門紅樓)) in Taipei for Renaissance Magazine a while back. The first building was Zhongshan Hall (中山堂) a national heritage site built in 1936. It now serves as a performance venue and houses an elegant café.

The second building was Man-Le Gate (滿樂門), built in the 1970s as a high end grocery store, Man Le was abandoned for a good while and renovated about 10 years ago. It is now a quaint Taiwanese tea shop.

The final building was the Ximen Red House (西門紅樓.) It was built in 1908 by a Japanese designer. The octagon shape represents good luck in Chinese culture and was hoped to guard locals against illness. The building now serves as a performance venue and houses a tea house.
