Asian Giant Hornet
My wife found this beautiful hornet dead on the ground. He was huge but was already drying out by the time I photographed him because he was atop the fridge the whole day and I don’t know how long he had been dead when my wife found him.
These guys are also very dangerous, a sting can kill.
Wow!
Yep, It’s a lucky thing it’s dead. Nice photos of a heck of a potentially lethal insect. Taken with a 105mm? I’m planning on a May 2014 or September 2014 pick up of the Nikon AF-S 600mm f/4 G ED VR lens. When you come back for a visit to Coquitlam, we oughta get together and go out to shoot. I hear that George C. Reifel Sanctuary is a great place to hit.
How large is this hornet?? and is there a nest somewhere close!!
Yes, Haruo Chikamori. The 105 is great for insects. Love the sharpness of this lens but not the bokeh. I traded an older 60mm that had beautiful bokeh and was way better for flowers. 600mm. Wow! I would love to go to the sanctuary!
It is big, Mom. Don’t worry, we are always careful with your grandchildren!
Rich, Heather’s trying to help me save up for the thing. I should have it about May or September of 2014. This May (2013) I get the TC-20EIII. It should put my 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII up to 140-400mm f/5.6. Remember the wonderful wildlife we used to see around Terry Fox Senior when we were going to school. Blue jays, crows? π Now, I’m going after bald eagles, snowy owls and Great Blue Herons. π
The “he” is actually a “she” and one sting normally can’t kil, unless your allergic. Even one bee sting could kill a person with an allergy.
Thanks, Mike. I wrote a sting can kill because my friends father was killed by one. He may have been allergic.
